The Ultimate Festival Fashion Survival Guide With VH1's Mali Thomas
Cuz lookin' good this festival season is all about survival of the fittest!
by SADE A SPENCE
With SXSW wrapping up and Ultra Music Festival kicking off today, we thought it was time to confront the biggest issue of festival season - looking stylish regardless of the wacky and unpredictable weather conditions Mother Nature has planned. From the humid beaches of Miami to the hot and dusty campgrounds of Coachella Valley, we got you set! VH1 Glam Coordinator and beauty extraordinaire, Mali Thomas, shares her favorite beauty tricks and products to keep you looking all kinds of fab this festival season - starting with ULTRA Music Festival in Miami.
Miami is prone to high humidity with temps hitting the low 80's, meaning ultra problems like sweating out your hair and sweating off your make-up.
"Less is more"
"For any festival... I love to stick with tinted moisturizers to BB (blemish base) creams. I've tried to go to festivals with a full face and I've gone with a minimum of make-up and I feel you got to meet in the middle." Thomas says a fresh, dewy face is perfect for an au natural look during the spring and summer months. But you can achieve a glam look by "Playing up those brows, play up that mascara, and give your self a bold lip!" When it comes to ULTRA, Thomas says you can still be a full fledged rockstar by adding a little shimmer to your lids. "If you want to be fun add a little eyeliner to the inner wash line of your eye."
Thomas' Festival Picks For A Fresh Face:
- Tinted Moisturizers - Laura Mercier, Bobby Brown
- MAC Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15
- Sephora #1 Lip Stain or Tabby Cat Cosmetics
- Anastasia Beverly Hills Bold Brow Kit
- Benefit "They're Real" Mascara
- MAC Loose Powder Pigments
- Inglot Pearl Eyeshadows

HAIRY SITUATIONS & UNRULY ROOTS
"Don't be afraid of your natural state, whether it's natural waves or an afro" suggests Thomas. She says keeping it simple is best when trying to tame your mane amidst hot and humid conditions. "If your roots are rather unruly, a chic braid, or a trendy top knot is an easy fix! And if you're looking to add some extra flair to your do, throw on some bunny ears or cover it up with a purple afro."
"With this kind of festival, it's not about being perfect, it's not about even being normal, its about your wildest dreams and your imagination, bring those out and bring those to this festival" -Mali Thomas
"Don't be afraid to dress-up a neon bathing suit, pop on some cut off shorts, and a body chain. This way you stay trendy and still very cool." encourages Thomas. "Less clothing is better. Expose your skin, but moisturize it. Make sure it looks beautiful and luminous." To achieve this look, the former make-up artist says Scott Barnes Body Bling will make you glow to the likes of Beyonce and JLo.
When it comes to accessorizing add a body chain over your swim suit, layer-up your bracelets, and decorate your nose with a septum ring.
